SOME THOUGHTS ON RESERVATION

Last week, as I was just browsing through the channels, I listened to one of the most honest confession ever made by a Indian politician, in my recent memory. The person was Naqvi, one of the few Muslim leaders in BJP. He was speaking about terrorism. He said,

" When our Founding fathers of Constitution included Reservation, they also wanted a definite time period for it to come to end. But today, no party has the braveness to talk about that period, including my party."

________________

On this note lets move on to the recent Supreme Court Judgment on the Creamy Layer. In Tamilnadu, Dalit leaders like Mr. Thol. Thirumavallavan, leader of Dalit Panthers Of India, is protesting against the Supreme Court Judgement. I'm quite sure that these sort of protests would be going on now in all parts of the country.

I will now give you an illustration.

In the heart of the city, there was a big Hospital. The cardiologist who was working there is a Dalit, who got to such a post through reservation. He has gone abroad five times, his family has dinner at five star hotel every week end and is only son attends the best school in the city. He also attended all the coaching classes possible by the best of the institution in the city. In the medical entrance examination he scored 90.25%.

Around 200 km away from the city is a young coolie, who is a dalit. He is a registered member of Dalit Panthers Of India. His meagre income is not guaranteed every day, and many a nights his family has to go to sleep without a supper. His only son ( he has five daughters) studies in a Local Government school that has no teachers for many subjects. Since he has to take care of cattle in the evening he doesn't attend any tuition's. Still he some how manages to study hard and always come first in the class and at the end of it ,manages to get 90.24% in the Medical Entrance Examination.

Medical counselling is going on and there is only one seat left, that too in the SC Quota. One of these two students can only get. We say by taking the creamy layer out of reservation that student from village should get reservation. The so called Dalit leaders say that Creamy layer should not be removed and the Doctor's son should get the seat. Its time for you to think who is really wanting the Dalit to improve, and who want the Dalit to remain as they are now, so that they can use them as a Vote bank for years to come, never having to worry about the Time frame that our founding fathers of Constitution said about.

Nice way to vent your views. Your example is also very good. My views are same as what you have mentioned.

In my opinion, reservation should be based on economical grounds and not based on caste. A very good example is the servant working in our house belongs to a upper caste and doesnt enjoy any benefits of reservation. Their condition is so poor that there is no reason why they shouldnt get any reservation.

I dont think the situation is going to change in future.

Hey, just one week before I had the same thought about reservation but I am not the owner of that thought. Actually, that thought belongs to a director of a movie. The movie dealt with the issue of reservation. I do not know the exact name of the movie but the climax was poignant. Actually, the movie belongs to 80’s. The movie emphasized the same point that the basis for reservation should be economy rather than caste. The movie did not have a big star caste but the movie is worth watching. In late 90’s, I have never seen a movie conveying good message. This movie really does that.

The movie narrated the issue of reservation beautifully. The story was that a woman who belongs to forward caste in spite of good marks fails to get a seat in a college due to reservation. Her family was economically weak. They even suffered to run their daily life. Therefore, her father produces a false community certificate and gets the seat for her daughter in that college. Later she becomes a collector and made lot of good things to the poor people. Later everybody comes to know about her fraudulent activity. The climax is how she justifies her violation.

The climax delivers the same message that the basis of reservation should be economy not caste. I really regret for the director because if the same movie had big star caste and released now it really would have turned the attention of lot of people. Nevertheless, I really have taken something out of the movie.

Anyway, you deserve applause for conveying the right message at right time.

hi sugu,

you have put your argument in a proper perspective. But in a society where injustice had happened to a society for thousands of years and still happening ( even today dalit are not allowed to wear chappels and they have to carry their chappels when they walk in the upper caste street ). I've witnessed a lot of atrocities happen to dalit girls, sexually harassed and used by upper caste men in the village and they are still weak to oppose it.
your example- it may happen in the real sense in a very rare case. you cant generalise it. When you want to render justice also there may be inequalities but it is not in large proportion as it is visualised.
we have become sanscritised and we also think like bramins and we are made to think like that.
I too was thinking like you, untill I started working in the remote villages where I saw the reality.May be I can share with you when I see you next.I was violently disturbed and it made me really think about the dalit issue.

Do you know many posts reserved for dalits are not filled up because there is no suitable candidates from dalit community? One has to be objective while understanding their problems.

Personally I feel, chances have to be given to them untill they are also up in the ladder along with others.

Hi Lally,

I dont think Subbu is opposing reservation for dalits. Please let me know

* How the current reservation is benefitting those in the remote villages that you are talking about.
* How this concept of creamy layer is going to take off any benefits that they are getting now.
* Has a dalit who has come up in life due to this reservation helped the people whom you have mentioned.

Proper education is the correct way to do it. Why is the Govt not talking any steps to run proper schools in all places and try to educate the people whom you have citied in your example.

Yes reservation is required but "who"

Thanks,
Arun
